It almost drove me crazy. I needed a new scanner and I had to buy 3 before finding the right one. It's not a question of brand, it's a question of technology. Thanks to your help and a few emails to major brands, I was able to find  out what I really need.

There is two kind of scanners: CIS (Contact Image Sensor) and CCD (Charge Coupled Device).

CCD is an analog optical system, converting optical/analog to digital.
CCD has depth of field. It's a bit slower  and noisy but the crease of books and sketchbooks are scanned sharp and clean. You can scan small objects, they will be sharp all over.

CIS has no optical system, it works with sensors.
CIS has no depth of field. If part of your sketch is not in contact with the scan glass, it will be blurred.  Crease, cover, etc will be blurred, and you can't scan small objects. I even find that the paper grain was blurred ( but maybe I'm exagerating). Some CIS indicate in their product description that you can open the scan lid large enough to scan a book. Well, beware, because being able to open the lid doesn't mean you can scan the book!

Here's a picture of both results...If you can't see the difference, buy the cheap, silent, slim CIS one!

If you want to scan books or sketchbooks, buy a CCD scanner.

Ah mais c'est que sans votre aide et quelques mails (parfois incongrus) aux marques qui fonts des scanners, je serais devenue dingue moi!

Il y a 2 sortes de scanners maintenant, deux technologies: CIS et CCD.

CCD est un systeme optique. Les scanners CCD sont gros, bruyants, relativement lents et chers...Mais ils donnent une image detaillee, avec profondeur de champ. La marge d'un livre, d'un carnet de croquis, la couverture du livre, ou n'importe quel objet un peu epais, vont etre scannes clairement dans le moindre detail.

CIS est un systeme numerique, qui ne marche que pour ce qui est en contact avec la vitre. Si vous scannez des feuilles cela peut convenir. C'est une technologie rapide et silencieuse. Par contre tout ce qui n'est pas en contact  va etre flou. C'est donc catastrophique pour photographier des livres, carnets de croquis, peluches...Bref impossible de s'amuser, et pour scanner mes carnets magiques, cela se revele epouvantable!  Certains descriptifs de scanners CIS indiquent qu'on peut ouvrir le couvercle pour placer de petits objets ou un livre...Sans toutefois dire que l'objet va etre flou, comme c'est sympathique.

Donc si vous voulez scanner vos carnets de croquis, achetez un CCD.

Lisez bien les descriptifs avant d'acheter, il est parfois tres difficile de savoir, n'hesitez pas a lire les commentaires dans des journaux en ligne, faire des recherches dans les site de la marque que vous envisagez d'acheter et lisez ce que vous trouverez sur Google apres avoir tape le nom exact de la bete que vous voulez acheter.
Voila, j'ai passe plusieurs jours a trouver et achete en ligne 2 scanners avant de trouver le bon, je me suis bien enervee, j'espere que ce test, inhabituel dans le Non dairy, vous evitera les ecueils sur lesquels j'ai failli me casser les dents ( tout en me cassant les pieds).

If your screen is in front of a white wall and you don't want to move it to take a picture, follow these steps:
Download my whitewall texture ( a white wall has a texture. This one is for a white wall painted with a roll, approximatively 2.5 inches behind a flat screen)

You will need my birds too, or any picture on a transparent layer:

Then:

1.Open white.jpeg in Photoshop. Add a gradient layer, in multiply mode, to recreate the shadow on your wall ( there is always a shadow, if not there is too much light in your room, or not enough, go to the beach instead of working there, it's not good for your eyes).

2.Copy and paste my burds. Double clic on the layer. Add a drop shadow effect with a

opacity: corresponding to the density of the shadows on your wall
distance: corresponding to thedistance between your wall and the birds
size: corresponding of the way your shadows are blurred on your wall.

A shadow is always softer and lighter than you think.

et voila, instant transparent screen, just add water!

Today we will have a lot of fun, adding some quirky graphic birds with realistic shadows to a "transparent screen".

Please, please don't say " I can do this with the effects in Photoshop hahaha". First, not everybody has Photoshop and this tutorial can be applied to other graphic softwares if you are just a little bit clever (you will need layers, though). Then , there is no "perspective" option in the Photoshop effects and that's the interesting part.

1.First of all:

make a photo of what's behind your screen. (thanks, krysalia!)

crop the image to the portion corresponding to your screen.

2.Then:

3.Copy and paste this image (burds_make02.png) in a layer. Copy, move, etc. to your taste:

It's fun, but it would be more realistic with shadows matching the real ones. Let's do it!

4. duplicate this layer, then select  layer 1. Lock the transparency of the layer1

5.Fill with black (d,x,⌘+delete key).
If the shadows in your room are blue, or brown, use a blue or a brown instead of black.

6. UNLOCK the layer. Use the blur filter, to match the way the shadows are blurred in your room. Notice that the more close an object is to a surface, the less blurred will be the shadow.

7.Play with the opacity of the layer until the shadows match the real ones.

8. Make the duplicated layer visible. Use the transform tool ( in the Edit menu) so the shadows will match the other shadows in your picture. Note the light direction and just follow it!

Et voila!

9. Use it as a desktop background .  There is quirky birds behind your screen!

J'ai besoin d'un peu d'aide pour mon prochain tuto. Il y a-t-il une vue interessante derriere votre ecran ( genre un meuble a casiers, le ciel de Montmartre, ou une cathedrale, hum, lalala) , avec des ombres portees, un peu? Si cela ne vous gene pas de m'envoyer une photo, au format ecran, je l'utiliserais volontiers pour faire un tuto ( la personne selectionnee gagne le background pour son ecran, evidement). J'ai besoin de quelqu'un d'assez motive pour reprendre une photo du resultat, et qui serait d'accord pour que j'utilise ces images dans le tuto, evidement. Si cela vous tente, envoyez une image de ce qu'il y a derriere votre ecran ,a la taille de l'ecran, sans l'ecran dessus, avec dans le sujet du mail " background tutorial"...Si il faut departager, je prendrais la personne qui laisse le plus souvent des coms ici.

I need some help for my next tutorial. I'd like to explain how to make a transparent bird screen, but I need a more interesting scenery than my pink wall...If you have a nice background behind your screen, and feel like letting me use it for a tutorial,please send me a picture of your background ( without the screen). I'll take the one that will fit the best in my tutorial, and if there is too many pictures, one from someone who comment frequently here. You have to be motivated enough to take a picture of the result!

Inspired by the transparent screens, I decided to make my own, with a twist: I pictured birds on my wall. I painted a texture of my wall the right colors and added the birds with a shadow consistent with the one coming from my window. It looks a bit weird, it suits me :)

C'est pas tout ca les ecrans transparents, mais il y a moyen de faire plus rigolo. J'ai peint une texture du mur derriere mon ordi et j'ai rajoute mes oiseaux avec la bonne orientation lumineuse. C'est debile d'accord, mais c'est rigolo et ca me va :)

Une sculpture d'Adelie est cachee dans le paysage, sauras-tu la retrouver? Pardon Adelie, elle trone sur mon bureau, du coup elle est dans l'image...Avec ma collec de jouets japonais animes, huhu :)

I'm always surprised about how much time people actually spend on choosing colors, trying to find rules to help them. Color is a very cultural thing, with all kind of different meanings and symbols, different ways to make it and see it. If you really think about it, there is no good colors theory. Color cannot be ruled by mathematics or culture. I'm afraid there is no rules.

Franchement tous ces gens qui essaient de vous expliquer des theories de la couleur, je trouve ca gonflant.  La couleur c'est quelquechose d'a la fois culturel et mathematique, il n'y a pas de regle stricte, ou il y en a tellement que finalement elles s'annulent. Par exemple la complementaire du rouge dans le systeme soustractif c'est un vert, alors que dans le systeme additif c'est un bleu turquoise. Les deux marchent. Ou pas. Il n'y pas de regles, ou plutot il y en a trop!

For example, I was really surprised how much I enjoyed the random chart of colors created by this simple vase, a flower left from my mother's day bouquet, both put on a very sweet tray I have in the nursery. I look at it when I feed my baby and I was wondering why I liked it so much.

Par exemple j'ai ete tres surprise d'etre ravie de l'harmonie coloree de ce bouquet sur un plateau ( merci Alix pour le hochet oiseau, trop top la classe) . Non je n'aime pas les oiseaux tant que ca, ou est-ce que vous etes alles chercher ca?  Bref. Cela me rejouit l'oeil, et tant mieux , parceque c'est juste sous mon nez quand je donne son biberon a Bebe Joli et il aime prendre son temps.

I find it just plain ugly.

But if I try just a little bit more harder:

en fait si je fais plus attention, ca ressemble plutot a ca, et la de nouveau cela me rejouit l'oeil ( et j'aime avoir l'oeil content)

now I love it.

It taught me a lesson : the important thing is not the colors you pick, it's the way you put them together.

It's been a while I was having this feeling and I wasn't able to put words on it.
Thanks to a few bottles of milk I was able to think about it enough to put it into words :)

Il y a donc une conclusion evidente: ce n'est pas le choix des couleurs qui compte, mais la facon dont on les met ensemble. Ca fait des annees que j'essayais de verbaliser ca, je suis bien contente que mon fils soit lent du biberon, ca me laisse le temps de penser.

This is my new desktop background. It's a work in progress, we will have some fun...But I need broad day light to continue. I'll explain later!

Am I getting crazy or scanners with depth of field don't exist anymore? I bought 2 and they were both blured in the depth. I can't scan my sketchbook anymore. This could be the death of my "carnet magique" I'm afraid. I'm SO pissed of. So if you know a good scanner able to scan sketchbooks, please, please, please, leave a comment!

I'm a geek. I took a look on other blogs, and all the cool girls were displaying their desktops and they all had a bunch of icons displayed everywhere and so. Ok, here is my TRUE desktop, and the background matches the icons. I have only 3 icons on my desktop. I'm sorry.
I don't show you the dock with all the softwares classified by frequency and 3 versions of Photoshop neatly organised. My house is a mess but my desktop is clean and neat. I'm a geek, I'm a freak, boooohooo. Am I the only one?

Je suis une sale geek. J'ai fait le tour des blogs, je m'effraie. Je suis la seule a avoir seulement 3 icones sur le bureau, assorties au fond d'ecran ( fait expres pour reposer l'oeil) ou quoi? Et encore je suis en progres, parceque d'habitude je fais mes fond d'ecran avec les memes lumieres que dans la piece ou je suis. Au point d'avoir desespere un de mes patrons une fois, qui a eteint une lampe (orange) dont il pensait qu'elle me genait et le faux reflet est reste allume sur mon ecran. La honte ( ca et le faux post-it : "penser a nourrir les rennes a 18h"). Heureusement la dessus il y a pire que moi.

Et encore, je ne vous montre pas la barre des programmes, avec ses 3 versions de Photoshop par ordre chronologique et les autres programmes par frequence d'utilisation. Limite je me fais peur.

Alors que mon bureau, pour de vrai, est un chantier soigneusement organise. Rassurez moi, je ne suis pas la seule hein? Dites?
